Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada declined to mention whether the kids’ Canadian parents had one-time links to the Islamic State in Syria or what type of journey documents were asked for. However, extremism specialists who regularly speak with the Canadians in Syria confirmed the programs had been for passports for five of 18 Canadian children typically trapped inside the u. S.

“There is sincere motion on the ground in Canada with households transferring to convey their youngsters back. Lawyers have been worried for some time, and those five kids, who’re amongst the general 18, maybe the first of what’s, with a bit of luck, a broader effort to bring those kids domestic,” stated Amarnath Amarasingam, an assistant professor at Queen’s University who researches extremism.

The government has come underneath renewed stress to repatriate Canadian youngsters, most of whom were born to Canadian girls who traveled there to join the Islamic State. Mr. Amarasingam stated the oldest toddler is 13. Most of the people below five have also recognized nine Canadian girls and 6 Canadian men trapped in Kurdish-run camps in northeastern Syria.

In an interview Wednesday, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said that while the testimonies of children stuck in Syrian camps are “coronary heart-rending,” the government can’t lose sight of the Canadian parents’ actions.

“That is the grossly irresponsible, dangerous, and reprehensible behavior of mother and father and families that led to their kids being in such instances,” Mr. Goodale said.

Alexandra Bain, director of Families Against Violent Extremism (FAVE), said not one of the kids has obtained a passport their families have asked. Ms. Bain, who has been in touch with families in each camp, stated that her corporation has been supporting 33 Canadians but is aware of numerous extra families detained.

“FAVE has helped several Canadian families request emergency journey files for their youngsters and grandchildren. … The government has yet to reply to our requests,” she said.

Nancy Caron, a spokeswoman for the Immigration Department, said the government is not privy to any Canadian passports or journey files issued to children of Canadian citizens who traveled to join the Islamic State and are now unable to depart Syria. Canada has no diplomatic presence in Syria, so applicants must tour a mission or embassy in the neighboring United States to obtain a passport.
“Given the security situation on the floor, the Government of Canada’s potential to provide consular help in any part of Syria is extraordinarily confined,” Ms. Caron stated in an email.

Ms. Bain at FAVE stated she is usually conscious of children beneath the age of five wanting assistance, which include a four-year-old orphan, a new child, a one-yr-vintage who have been laid low with excessive bronchial asthma attacks, “and a host of other small children with respiratory and other clinical troubles, which include malnutrition.”

“Mothers within the camps have contacted FAVE to describe the horrors their youngsters are going through,” she stated, noting they report a lack of smooth water, food, and medication. “If Canada doesn’t act right now to deliver those families home, I worry there ought to be a loss of young existence nicely.”

Canadian households were seeking passports for their spouses and children who had been in the camps for more than 12 months.

Last year, a senior Canadian government supply, who changed into not authorized to speak publicly, instructed The Globe and Mail that officials from Canada’s Beirut embassy met with the Kurdish government in northern Iraq, in which they filled out passport utility forms for Canadians trapped in neighboring Syria.

Speaking to The Globe this week, the source said that as far as they had been aware, the Canadians never received passports because they could not get to an embassy to fill out the specified immigration paperwork.
