Hendersonville Sister Cities awards $4,000 to 5 local students through its annual “Hendersonville Student Ambassador” Travel Scholarship. Skylar Smith, 20, double-majoring in Political Science and Global Studies and minoring in Spanish at UNC-Chapel Hill, can further her language studies this summer via UNC’s 6-week Spanish Business software in Sevilla, Spain. Skylar has lived in Henderson County and graduated from West Henderson High in 2017.
Alex Ramirez, 19, is double-majoring in Human Development & Family Studies and Education at UNC-Chapel Hill and is enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching graduate-stage courses via the Pre-MAT program, wanting to earn a Ph.D. In schooling. Alex will similarly pursue his education studies overseas in the fall, spending the 2019 fall semester in Nagoya, Japan, at Nanzan University, studying Japanese and gazing at schooling practices in the Eastern way of life. Alex is a first-generation North Carolinian raised in Hendersonville and a primary-generation university scholar after graduating from Henderson County Early College in 2017.
Mohammed Khalafalla, 19, is an International Business major at UNC-Greensboro looking ahead to a career in global affairs and/or politics, eager to study Japan and its history and lifestyle. After graduating from East Henderson High in 2015, Maria apprenticed with Global Citizen at an NGO in Senegal earlier than interning India’s enterprise. Created in November 2017, the scholarship was designed to help neighborhood college students, facilitate the global exchange of ideas and culture, and foster consciousness and appreciation of worldwide family members among Henderson County young people.
